The east coast of
Mallorca is probably the nicest stretch of the island's coastline.
There are
some wonderful beaches and all the resorts are so different. Let's work
down the coast ...
Cala Ratjada is very much
a German stronghold but the port area and promenade are worth making
the trip for. There are many fine fish restaurants along the promenade.
Arta is one of the
biggest towns in the area. Shops close 1.30 - 4.30 pm. Market day is
Tuesday. Capdepera golf course is nearby.
Costa de Los Pinos is a
quiet area north of Cala Millor. There are some nice restaurants in the
town and it is the home of the 9-hole Son Servera golf course.
Son Servera is an inland
market town. There isn't much there and the best day to go if you fancy
a bit of inland Mallorca is Friday, which is market day.
Cala Bona is at the north
end of Cala Millor and is a very popular resort with British
holidaymakers. There are many bars and restaurants and the harbour area
is worth a visit. You can stroll down the promenade into Cala Millor.
Cala Millor, for many
years it was regarded as a 'German' resort, but there are more Brits
there these days. There are many fine cafes, bars and restaurants, and
the walkways, one street in from the promenade is littered with shops.
The long beach is one of the best in Mallorca but swimming can be
dangerous at times so observe the warning flags.
Sa Coma is at the south
end of Cala Millor and, again, whilst popular with many different
nationalities, it is attracting more and more British tourists these
days. The fine beach is one of the big attractions at Sa Coma. There is
a market on Wednesday afternoon.
S'Illot is only a small
resort but is intimate and friendly and has a nice beach, You can feed
the ducks there!
Porto Cristo is the home
of the famous Caves of Drach. It is a lovely resort and to sit and
enjoy a drink or meal overlooking the harbour is one of the nicest ways
to relax. Mind you, by the time you get your bill you may not feel
relaxed, it is quiet an expensive resort - it is a bit cheaper in the
back streets. There is a small market on Sunday.
Calas de Mallorca is a
purpose built resort, neatly built in a compact area with plenty of
hotels, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. There are two large play
areas for children with a wide range of activities.
Cala Domingos is the main
beach for Calas de Mallorca and is a very popular cove.
Cala Murada ... now that
is a German stronghold. Try getting an English newspaper there!
However, it is a small town and the beach is small but nice,
Porto Colom is one of the
nicest towns on the coast. The walk along the front is exhilirating and
the bay is always full of small boats. There is a beach at Cala
Marsal, which is a popular British resort. There is a small market on
Tuesday.
Porto Petro is just
around the corner from Cala d'Or and is a quaint fishing town. The port
area is a popular place for enjoying a nice meal.
Cala Figuera is probably
the quaintest fishing port on the island. Well recommended for a trip
out if you have a car.
