| Every day we
get inundated with e-mails from people asking he most basic of
questions like: "What's the weather like?" to the such questions as:
"How far is it from my hotel to the middle of Cala d'Or?" We answer
every single e-mail we receive but have listed those most frequently
asked questions below, which will (a) hopefully answer your queries and
(b) reduce our workload!
OK, let's
start with - What is the weather like?"
Hot...Between May and October it is virtually sunshine all the way with
very little rain. In July and August it can be very humid and at night
it is very sticky. If you come to Cala d'Or over the Winter months
you will need to bring a jumper and/or coat for the evenings because it
does go cooler but there will almost certainly be some stage each day
when you can still enjoy the sun - however, there isn't much open for
you to do at night.
Is there anywhere I can hire bicycles from?
Yes, there is a hire shop called Moto Sprint on the road to the Marina from cala d'Or, just before the British "One Stop Shop". You can contact them by email at motosprint@retemail.es or visit their website at www.moto-sprint.com
How many cigarettes can I take back home with me?
The simple answer is that there is no limit these days, but if you click here you will get some official guidlines and also the cost of cigarettes in Mallorca in 2010
Can I make reverse charge phone calls to the UK or Ireland from Mallorca?
Yes, dial 1408 and you will get connected to an operator
Do you have ATM machines in Mallorca?
Of course we do ... doesn't everywhere these days? To check out the location of ATM's abroad for Visa and Mastercard, check out their websites at: www.visaeurope.com and www.mastercard.comwww.mastercard.com
Can I do the UK lottery while I am on holiday?
No, unless you do it online at www.national-lottery.co.uk. You can, however, partake in the Spanish Lottery, and the Euro Millions, which is the same as 'back home' except it costs you 2€ per line.
The lottery off in Cala d'Or is on Avenidos Bienvenidos, in the stationery shop opposite he Spar (more or less)
I
would like to get married in Mallorca - how do I go about it?
First
of all, it isn't easy. You are best to speak to either the British or
Irish consul for advice. Their respective telephone numbers are: (0034)
971 712 445 and (0034) 971 719 244. Alternatively, you could check out
the following websites, both of which organise weddings and events. The
former is run by a British girl, Jane, while the second one is a German
set up, but they do speak English. www.mallorca-blessings.com
and www.mallorca-hochzeiten.de
Do you
have any information about my hotel, pictures etc?
If you check out the alpharooms website there is a good bet they will have details of your hotel or
apartment block on there.
Can you buy baby foods, nappies and milk in Santa Ponsa?
Yes. Heinz baby foods and other brands are available in Supermarkets and Chemists, as are most brands of nappies. In Spain Nutraben is similar to SMA baby milk. Milupa Aptimil is available in Supermarkets as is Cow & Gate, which is available in the some smaller supermarkets. For further information on baby products in Mallorca, and also pre-ordering your little one's requisites to have delivered when you arrive on holiday go to www.babyabroad-mallorca.com. Alternatively, the One Stop British shop on the way to the Marina sell a wide range of baby products.
How
much does a taxi cost from the airport and how long does it take?
It takes about an hour minutes and costs around 60-65 euros - it
depends on the time of day and where about in Cala d'Or you are going.
Can I
get to Cala d'Or by bus from the airport?
Yes,
but it will take a good couple of hours - and that won't include
waiting time at the Palma depot, as there are only six buses a day on
weekdays (less at the weekend). You will first need to get a bus from
the airport into the centre of Palma - this bus runs frequently. To be
honsest, on top of what you are going to spend during your stay, the
cost of a taxi shouldn't put up the price of your holiday all that much.
Is
there anywhere for me to access my e-mails while I am on holiday?
Yes, there are several internet cafes around, and many bars have an
internet facility for customers.
Can I get UK
newspapers whilst on holiday?
Yes, but they
cost a lot more than at home (even though most are printed in Mallorca
these days). For example the Daily
Mail costs 2,20 euros - and you don't get any supplements in the
Saturday edition. There is an English-language daily newspaper, the Majorca Daily Bulletin (1 euro) - but it is not much good and often contradicts
itself on local stories, and for the self styled "biggest selling
English language daily in Spain" it contains an awful lot of boring
international news of very little interest to its English-speaking
readers, either here in Mallorca, or on holiday.
Can I watch my favourite "Soaps" whilst on
holiday?
Of course you can, very few British bars don't keep up with events
in Albert Square, Corro or Emmerdale! I am
thinking of coming to Cala d'Or to work in the Summer months, what do
you recommend?
As you can imagine, work in the Summer varies from one year to the
next. It is impossible to point you in any direction but what we would
recommend that you come out on a cheap package towards the end of April
and look around for work - and accommodation - while you are here. If
you get fixed up then stay. If not, just enjoy the holiday! Go to our employment advice page.
Can
you organise accommodation for me?
We can't - we leave that to the professionals like alpharooms - they will look after all your hotel or apartment needs.
Can I go Scuba diving in Cala d'Or?
Of course - being surrounded by water, the Island of Mallorca is very
popular for Scuba divers. There is a Scuba Diving centre (MDS Diving
Centre) at Cala Ferrera.
Is there anywhere I can go on an organised fishing trip?
Yes En Jaume Charters organise trips throughout the year. They can be contacted on (0034) 971 207 415 or mobile (0034) 689 684 131. Or you can visit their website at: www.enjaumecharters.com
Is there anywhere I can hire a wheelchair or mobility scooter?
